TIG welding in the assembly of stainless steel commercial kitchens

Building SMGE

Catering technology specialists SMGE GmbH is a company with tradition. The Austrian company based in Holzhausen, Upper Austria has been installing stainless steel commercial kitchens for company canteens, retirement homes, hospitals, and public catering facilities since 1998. In the case of new installations, the kitchen professionals are involved in the design right from the start. Prefabricated stainless steel modules, such as drawers, built-in cupboards, and various types of work surface, are used.

Josef Neuheimer - SMGE
We often work to tight deadlines and therefore always need to be ready to go. We cannot afford for our systems to fail. Thanks to the proximity of the regional Fronius service centers, we can always rely on quick, solution-based support, which gives us a great deal of reassurance.
Josef Neuheimer, Managing Director

Challenge

“Due to the hygiene standards in the food industry, joints have to be completely free of germs and easy to clean,” explains Josef Neuheimer, managing director of SMGE. SMGE installers generally use stainless steel for commercial kitchens. Stainless steel produces outstanding visible welding seams that ensure easy-to-clean and germ-free surfaces. The TIG process is an additional prerequisite as it leaves no pores.

In addition, every employee at SMGE has to be able to carry out minor welding tasks – without needing explicit and comprehensive welder training. Nevertheless, it’s well known that the TIG process in particular requires a high degree of dexterity, which is why it is so important that the weld properties of the chosen devices provide the highest possible levels of support. Operations have to be intuitive – the operator needs to able to clearly see which settings to choose and how to select them.

Solution

Following years of use, the kitchen professionals are very impressed with the Fronius MagicWave 230i, and above all the new, totally intuitive Fronius TransTig 170/210 range. The day-to-day work makes one thing abundantly clear: “When it comes to repairs, we need to be quick and flexible. The fact that the systems are compact and portable is just as important as their technical features,” explains Manuel Stieblehner, head of stainless steel production and engineering at SMGE. The TransTig enables SMGE to overcome all the technical challenges it comes up against. “The clear layout of its operating elements makes its operation extremely simple, which saves us a huge amount of time.” Weighing in at less than 10 kg, the TransTig 170/210 is the lightweight professional TIG welding system of choice.
